About Palm Bay, Florida
Palm Bay is a city of 119,760 people in Brevard County, the largest in the county by both population and land area. The Ais people are believed to have lived here first, near the springs where Turkey Creek meets the Indian River. John Tillman arrived in the late 1870s, and his wharf at the creek's mouth became a steamboat landing that brought in more settlers. By the late 1880s his orange and banana grove on the north bank was turning a profit, and the railroad reached the area in 1894.
In the 1920s the town, then known as Tillman, took the name Palm Bay from the palm-lined bay at the creek's mouth. Local businessmen formed the Melbourne-Tillman Drainage District, sold $1.5 million in bonds, and starting in 1922 dug 80 canals stretching 180 miles to drain 40,000 acres of swamp west of town. Farmers planted citrus and truck farms and sent winter vegetables north by rail. Then in 1926 the dredges caught fire and a severe hurricane struck, the local economy slumped, and the drainage district went bankrupt.
- A church from a failed colonyBetween 1910 and 1914 a land company, the Indian River Catholic Colony, set up at Tillman. Its farmers tried to raise two crops each season, wore out the soil, and the colony collapsed. The families who remained put up St. Joseph's Church on Miller Street, and it is now the oldest building still standing in Palm Bay.
- Port Malabar and a new cityGeneral Development Corporation bought and mapped out large tracts here in 1959 for a housing project called Port Malabar. Palm Bay became an incorporated city on January 16, 1960, when 2,808 people lived there. The company laid out streets, built and sold homes, and put up a water treatment plant, which the city bought after the company went bankrupt in 1991.
- A home for engineersL3Harris Technologies employs 3,400 people on its campus on Palm Bay Road. In 2015 the Harris Corporation opened a technology center of 464,000 square feet, close to where Palm Bay Road meets Troutman Boulevard, with room for about 1,400 scientists and engineers.
