About Pascagoula, Mississippi

Pascagoula is a city of 22,010 people and the seat of Jackson County, on Mississippi Sound at the mouth of the Pascagoula River. It takes its name from the Pascagoula people, whose villages stood upriver, and the name is usually translated as "bread eater." English, French and Spanish rulers took turns holding this coast. For 74 days in 1810 it belonged to the Republic of West Florida, and in 1812 it joined the Mississippi Territory for good.

Its neighbor Scranton was incorporated in 1870. Pascagoula became a village in 1892 and a city in 1901, and a governor's proclamation joined the two towns in 1904, which a legislative act confirmed in 1912. That is why today's downtown was once Scranton. Before World War II Pascagoula was a quiet fishing village of about 5,000, but wartime shipbuilding paid high wages, workers poured in, and the small town grew into a small city.

“we found a wide bay, called the Bay of the Pascagoulas ; because, within this bay, there flows a river, upon the borders of which the Pascagoulas are established, at a distance of about twenty leagues inland”
M. Penicaut, French colonist, 1699
  • The Old Spanish FortBuilders put up the Old Spanish Fort sometime in the 1750s, and it is counted as the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley.
  • Ingalls and the LottsIngalls Shipbuilding grew out of the state's Balance Agriculture with Industry program in the late 1930s and 1940s and soon became Mississippi's largest industrial employer. Chester Paul Lott was one of the many who moved here to work at the yard. His son Trent grew up in Pascagoula and served for many years as a U.S. senator from Mississippi.
  • Legend of the Singing RiverLorin Thompson painted the mural Legend of the Singing River for the Pascagoula post office in 1939. It was restored in the 1960s, when the building became the public library. After Hurricane Katrina damaged the building in 2005, the mural went into storage, and in 2010 it was hung again in the new post office on Jackson Avenue.
  • The fishermen's story of 1973In October 1973 two co-workers, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker, said aliens took them aboard a craft while they were fishing near Pascagoula. Their account drew reporters from across the country. In June 2019 the city put up a historical marker near the spot, and it now celebrates the story every year downtown at Goula Palooza.
  • Katrina's 20-foot surgeHurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, at high tide, and its 20-foot storm surge flooded nearly 92% of the city. Most homes along Beach Boulevard were lost. Few residents had flood insurance, and many had to raise their houses on pilings before they could get a permit to rebuild.
