About Peculiar, Missouri

Peculiar is a city in Cass County, Missouri, with 5,621 residents recorded in the 2020 census. County surveyor Robert Cass platted the community in 1868 after families arrived from several eastern and southern states. Its unusual name is explained by two local accounts, one involving postal naming and another describing a settler's vision.

  • An 1868 BeginningThe post office opened on June 22, 1868, and Robert Cass filed the plat for the Town of Peculiar on July 29.
  • Two Naming StoriesOne account credits postmaster Edgar Thomson's frustration with rejected names, while another traces Peculiar to a settler recognizing land seen in a vision.
  • City Since 1953After incorporating as a village in the 1890s, Peculiar became a Missouri fourth class city in 1953.
  • Nine-Day CentennialPeculiar marked its centenary in July 1968 with nine days of events, including an antique sale, rodeo, and Western horse show.
  • Old PeculiarOld Peculiar lies one mile east along the banks of the East Fork East Branch South Grand River.
