About Pendleton, South Carolina

Pendleton is a town of 3,489 people in northwestern Anderson County, where its edge meets Pickens County and the city of Clemson. For centuries this land belonged to the Cherokee nation. Once England made South Carolina one of its colonies, the Cherokee traded with the British. The Cherokee lost a war against the British that began in 1759. The British then controlled trade in the region and began settling the land with large farms.

Andrew Pickens, a general in the Revolutionary War, made his home here, and in 1790 he commissioned the District of Pendleton. In the first half of the 1800s, wealthy plantation owners from the low country built houses in Pendleton so they could spend their summers away from the coast.

  • Farmers organized in 1815Local farmers formed the Pendleton Farmers Society in 1815. It was still going as the twenty-first century began, so it ranks among the nation's oldest farm societies.
  • Hunter's Store on the squareFarmer's Hall and Hunter's Store are two of the best-known historic buildings on Pendleton's town square. The Pendleton District Historical, Recreational and Tourism Commission now runs its main office out of Hunter's Store.
  • Sister city of StornowayPendleton has a sister city across the Atlantic: Stornoway, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
