About Central, South Carolina

Central is a town of 5,247 people in Pickens County. The Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway founded it during a railroad boom that started in 1873. On March 17, 1875, Central became an incorporated town, and its limits reached half a mile out from the railroad depot in every direction.

The railroad that built Central also nearly emptied it. Southern Railway shifted its headquarters to Greenville in 1897, so trains quit stopping here to swap engines, and soon every railroad shop and office had closed. Two new arrivals then drew residents back: Issaqueena Mill, and in 1906 the Wesleyan Methodist Bible Institute.

  • Halfway between two citiesThe town got its name from its spot on the Air Line Railway, at the midpoint of the route between Atlanta and Charlotte.
  • A college since 1906The Wesleyan Methodist Bible Institute opened in Central in 1906 and helped the town recover after the railroad offices left. It grew into Southern Wesleyan University, whose main campus sits east of downtown and enrolls over 600 traditional undergraduates.
  • A downtown split by the tracksThe rail line that gave Central its start still runs through the middle of downtown. Many commercial buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries survive beside it, most of them one story tall. The Central Heritage Society keeps a museum with records on the area's historic buildings and homes.
