About Penngrove, California

Penngrove is a community of 2,637 people in Sonoma County, at the foot of Sonoma Mountain between Petaluma and Cotati. In July 1844 the Mexican government rewarded Captain Juan Castaneda for his military service with Rancho Cotate, a grant that took in today's Penngrove, Cotati and Rohnert Park. Dr. Thomas S. Page bought the rancho in 1849, and over the years it was broken into pieces and sold to newcomers.

The first European settlers came in 1852, when J.M. Palmer, David Wharff and W.J. Hardin made their homes here. The line between Petaluma and Santa Rosa, built by the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad, opened in October 1870, and a town grew up where the tracks crossed Main Street, at that time the road linking those two towns.

“In the late 1860s, two brothers by the name of Penn came out from Pennsylvania and bought 80 acres (320,000 m2) of land in this area. They planted the area with olive trees, but when the trees matured it was found that the olives were not edible. The Penn brothers tore out many of the groves, sold the land and moved away.”

  • Paving stones for San FranciscoLate in the 19th century, three large quarries here employed 200 men cutting basalt cobblestones. Trains hauled thousands of them to Petaluma, where barges carried them on to San Francisco to pave its streets. Old quarry scars are still visible on the slopes from East Railroad Avenue to Roberts Road.
  • Egg country after 1900Once the century turned, chickens took over. Penngrove grew into one of the busiest egg and poultry districts around, trailing only Petaluma. The rail station burned down in 1980, but the old poultry loading docks behind Penngrove Market survive and now hold businesses.
  • A name that kept changingThe post office opened as Penn's Grove on October 30, 1882. Mail kept getting mixed up with Penn's Grove, New Jersey, and with Pine Grove, the old name of Sebastopol, so the name was changed more than once. By May 1895 it was Penn's Grove again, and in 1908 it became Penngrove for good.
  • A church on wooden rollersThe Methodist Episcopal Church went up in 1898 at Formschlag Lane and Petaluma Hill Road. In 1910 it was rolled on wooden rollers to 9970 Oak Street. A new sanctuary followed in 1955 to 1957, and the old building became a fellowship hall used by scouts, 4-H and other groups.
  • A club house built in 1922During World War I, Penngrove women gathered in Evart's Hall to do Red Cross work, and afterward they wanted a home of their own. The town raised money and materials and built the Community Club House in 1922 for $9,000. After a fire in the late 1970s, the Penngrove Social Firemen bought it, and it still hosts voting and fundraisers.
