About Pepperdine University, California
Pepperdine University is a community of 2,747 people in Los Angeles County, about 3 miles east of Malibu, built around the campus that gives it its name. Until 1968 this ground was undeveloped ranch land, and its new life began when the owners gave it to Pepperdine College for a campus on the coast.
- A gift of 138 acresPepperdine College received 138 acres of empty ranch land in Malibu in October 1968. Rhoda-May Adamson Dallas, Sylvia Rindge Adamson Neville and Merritt H. Adamson gave the land so the college could build a new campus there. Within four years the first students were taking classes on it.
- Opening day in 1972Students began classes at the Malibu campus for the first time on September 6, 1972. That fall 867 enrolled, and 475 of them were freshmen, the biggest entering class Pepperdine had seen up to then.
- 2,747 people in 2020The Census Bureau counts Pepperdine University as a community of its own, and in 2020 it found 2,747 people living here, about 7 miles south of Calabasas.
