About Pine Ridge, South Dakota

Pine Ridge is a community of 3,138 people and the largest in Oglala Lakota County. It takes its name from the pine trees growing on the ridge that rings the town site, and it was once known as Pine Ridge Agency.

The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 created the Great Sioux Reservation, and in 1889 the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation was formed from part of it. Pine Ridge became the headquarters of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, whose offices sit at 107 West Main Street.

  • A schoolhouse in 1879At noon on February 8, 1879, the United States government opened the Oglala Indian Trading School. Seven Sioux leaders gathered to see the cornerstone of its first schoolhouse laid: Red Cloud, Young Man Afraid of His Horses, American Horse, Red Dog, Little Wound, Slow Bulls and Lone Bear. The school is now Pine Ridge School, and in 1957 its high school teams became the Thorpes, honoring the Olympic champion Jim Thorpe.
  • Home of the tribal councilFrom Pine Ridge, the Oglala Sioux Tribe runs a reservation that covers 3.5 thousand square miles, an area over twice as large as Rhode Island. Its twenty-one member council is elected under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, and Pine Ridge Village is one of the nine election districts, choosing three of those members.
  • Olympic gold in 1964Billy Mills was born in Pine Ridge. At the 1964 Olympics he won the gold medal in the 10,000 meter race.
