About Wounded Knee, South Dakota
The town takes its name from Wounded Knee Creek. On December 29, 1890, soldiers of the 7th Cavalry killed more than 300 Sioux men, women and children in the area. The victims were being moved to the reservation at Pine Ridge.
On February 27, 1973, members of the American Indian Movement took over part of the Pine Ridge Reservation near the town. They were protesting federal policies toward Native Americans. A standoff with federal authorities lasted 71 days. It ended when the group surrendered on May 8.
