About Pittston, Maine

Pittston is a town of 2,875 people in Kennebec County, on the east bank of the Kennebec River. It takes its name from the family of John Pitt, who were among its early settlers.

In September 1775 Colonel Benedict Arnold set out from Pittston with more than 1,000 soldiers, bound up the Kennebec River to attack Quebec City. The troops sailed from Massachusetts on eleven ships and came ashore at the home of Reuben Colburn, a boatbuilder on the river who had helped plan the march on Quebec through the Maine wilderness. From his landing the expedition pushed upriver toward Canada.

  • 200 bateaux in two weeksWhen General Washington asked for boats, Colburn's crew built 200 wooden bateaux in two weeks, and they were waiting when Arnold arrived. Seasoned lumber ran short for an order that large, so the builders used green wood, which was more likely to give way on the river. Colburn and twenty of his builders then marched north with the army, hauling supplies and patching the boats along the route.
  • Arnold's headquartersColburn's house, built in 1765, served as Arnold's headquarters, and both Arnold and Aaron Burr slept under its roof. The Colburn family kept the house until 1953. Today it is the Colburn House State Historic Site, standing off Route 27 on Arnold Road.
