About Pleasure Point, California

Jack O'Neill, the wetsuit maker, patented the name Surf Shop in San Francisco in 1952. Seven years later he moved to Santa Cruz. He set up first at Cowells and later at 41st Avenue in Pleasure Point. The neighborhood is a well-known surf spot with deep surf roots.

In the 1920s, during Prohibition, volunteer firefighters called the Pleasure Point Night Fighters kept watch for fires and unruly crowds. The group came back in the 1950s, and a local surfing association renewed it in the 1960s. Its Pack Your Trash Day, started in the 1970s, was among the earliest beach cleanups.
