About Twin Lakes, California
Twin Lakes is a community of 4,944 people in Santa Cruz County, on the coast between Santa Cruz and Capitola. Jacob Schwan founded it after claiming 100 acres of government land, and in 1862 he put up a house that was still standing in good shape in 1911.
The tract became best known as a Baptist resort and summer encampment, and the conventions held there made Twin Lakes well known. Schwan donated a large share of the land for those gatherings, and what had been farm and grazing ground grew into a lively settlement.
- Ten acres from OaklandThe Baptists accepted an offer from J. C. Kimble, an Oakland resident, who donated ten acres on the highest part of the tract. A gift from Jacob Schwan enlarged the grounds, and by 1892 a hotel, several cottages and a large number of tents stood there.
- Schwan LakeJacob Schwan later left his first house for a new home on the banks of the lake that carries his name, Schwan Lake, and he spent his last years there.
- Twin Lakes State BeachThe town's shore is Twin Lakes State Beach, a mile of sand where people come to swim and picnic. It also has hiking trails, and it's a favorite spot for stand-up paddle boarding.
