About Paradise Park, California
The California Powder Works opened on this land in 1861, when the Civil War cut off explosives shipped from the East. A blast in 1898 killed 13 people, and the works shut down in 1914. In 1924, Freemasons from Fresno bought the 138 acres for a summer retreat. They gave its streets Masonic names.
Paradise Park holds the California Powder Works Bridge, built in 1872. It is a wooden covered bridge of the Smith truss design. It stands among the best-preserved bridges of that kind in the nation.
