About Point Clear, Alabama

In 1944 the Grand Hotel at Point Clear became the base for Operation Ivory Soap. Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Thompson ran it from a hotel suite. Its school trained 5,000 Army seamen, who served in the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Guam. The name was chosen because, like the floating repair units, Ivory soap floats.

By the 1800s, wealthy families from Mobile and New Orleans spent their summers at Point Clear. During yellow fever outbreaks, they believed the daily breeze off Mobile Bay gave them healthier air. Most arrived by ferry at Zundel's Wharf, so the cottages face the bay.
