About Polk City, Florida

Polk City is a city of 2,713 people in Polk County, set between Lakeland and the Green Swamp. Farmers began settling this ground in the 1800s, and the farm community became the Town of Polk City by incorporation on April 3, 1925. In 2005 a city ordinance changed its title to the City of Polk City.

The town took its name from the county, which honors James Knox Polk, the nation's 11th president. Its land lies in the Central Florida Highlands, where flat fields give way here and there to gently rolling hills.

  • A railroad turned trailThe General James A. Van Fleet State Trail begins in Polk City and runs 29.2 paved miles north to Mabel, following the bed of an abandoned Seaboard Air Line Railroad route across the Green Swamp. It is named for a general who commanded troops in both World Wars and in Korea. People on the trail often spot egrets, herons, gopher tortoises and alligators.
  • Fantasy of Flight since 1995Kermit Weeks had already started an aviation museum near Kendall when he opened Fantasy of Flight in Polk City on October 19, 1995. Its hangars stand beside Lake Agnes, where seaplanes can land, and Weeks named the airfield Orlampa because it sits about halfway between Orlando and Tampa. The main attraction closed in 2014. A smaller aircraft exhibit took its place in 2015, and work on a new hangar began with a groundbreaking in November 2025.
  • Founder's Day festivalEvery year Polk City celebrates its founding with a Founder's Day festival in the midtown park, right where the Van Fleet trail begins.
