About Port Richey, Florida
Port Richey is a city of 3,052 people in Pasco County, on the Pithlachascotee River close to the Gulf of Mexico. In December 1883 Aaron M. Richey left St. Joseph, Missouri, and made a home near the river's mouth. On July 9, 1884, he began running a post office from his house, and that office gave the place its name.
Decades later a neighbor grew up with a similar name. New Port Richey got its own post office in 1915 and incorporated first, so Port Richey answered by becoming a city on May 18, 1925. Port Richey has stayed small, covering 2.7 square miles, much of it water.
- The Boat Building RiverLocals call the Pithlachascotee the Cotee. Its name joins two Creek words, one meaning canoe and one meaning to chop out, because people hollowed canoes out along its banks. Seminole builders carved them from cypress trunks. On an 1851 chart, the U.S. Coast Survey wrote the name as "Boat Building River." It flows more than 23 miles to reach the Gulf at Miller's Bayou, and paddlers can follow it on a Florida State Canoe Trail.
- Johnny Cash's river houseJohnny Cash owned a home on the Pithlachascotee starting in 1979. He and June Carter Cash got the house when her mother, the country musician Maybelle Carter, died. The couple kept it until 2002, when they sold it, and both of them died the following year, in 2003.
- Seven votes to abolishBecause the city stayed so small, its voters were asked seven times whether to do away with it: in 1953, 1974, 1975, 1978, 1997, 2007 and on Sept. 30, 2019. Port Richey came through every one of those elections and remains a city today.
