About Port St. Joe, Florida

Port St. Joe is a city of 3,357 people and the county seat of Gulf County, on St. Joseph Bay in the Florida Panhandle. Spanish settlers lived on this shore around 1700 and named the place San JosΓ©. In 1835, while Florida was still a territory, businessmen from Apalachicola, where land titles were tied up in court, founded a new town called St. Joseph on the bay.

The town grew fast. By 1837 it held an estimated 11,000 to 12,000 people, more than any other city in the territory, so 56 delegates gathered there to write a constitution for statehood. The convention opened on December 3, 1838, and closed on January 11, 1839, and Florida entered the Union in 1845. That is why Port St. Joe still calls itself the Constitution City.

  • Emptied by fever and stormYellow fever drove most residents out of St. Joseph in 1841. When the USS General Taylor stopped there on May 1, 1844, its crew found just a handful of people packing to go and workers taking houses apart. On September 9 that year a hurricane's storm surge wiped out whatever was left, and some who had called St. Joseph a "sin city" took the storm as a sign of God's anger.
  • A Union raid in 1862During the Civil War, Florida made much of the Confederate army's salt, and Saint Joseph had large salt works. On September 15, 1862, a Union officer aboard the USS Kingfisher reported that his men had sent word for the works to stop. Production went on, so the Kingfisher sailed into Saint Joseph Bay and put at least 50 men ashore, and they wrecked the salt works.
  • A new town in 1909The Apalachicola Northern Railroad reached the bay in 1909, and a new settlement grew up near the site of the old one. The informal name Port St. Joe apparently became official at about the same time, and in 1913 the town was incorporated as the City of St. Joe. Hurricane Michael did heavy damage to the town on October 10, 2018.
  • Medal of Honor, 1968Clifford Chester Sims, a native of Port St. Joe, was born on June 18, 1942. On February 21, 1968, while fighting close to Hue in Vietnam, he threw his body onto a booby trap to shield the men of his squad and was killed. He received the Medal of Honor for that act.
  • The convention rememberedConstitution Convention Museum State Park covers 14 acres at 200 Allen Memorial Way, just off U.S. 98. Inside, the museum re-creates the room where the delegates met, with life-size delegate figures, among them Territorial Governors Robert Reid and William P. Duval, arguing over the early constitution, and its exhibits show daily life in 19th-century St. Joseph.
