About Eastpoint, Florida
Eastpoint is a community of 2,614 people in Franklin County, on the Florida Panhandle. It grew up on the shore of Apalachicola Bay, at the mouth of the Apalachicola River, where fishing and oystering drew people to the water.
Around 1900 Eastpoint was chosen for a test of cooperative living. A promotional guide to Franklin County, printed in 1901, said the Co-operative Association of America had obtained a thousand acres that faced the sea. The association meant to build a cooperative colony there.
- Named for its pointThe name comes from where the community sits: the eastern tip of a peninsula, at the spot where the large Apalachicola River empties into Apalachicola Bay. When the century turned, people still spelled the name as two words, East Point.
- Work in Florida or MaineMembers of the Co-operative Association of America could choose where to work, either at East Point or at Lewiston, Maine. People who didn't want to live cooperatively could join as associate members for $2 a year. Associate members could buy land for a farm, a garden or fruit, facing the sea if they liked, close to good fishing and oystering.
- The fire of June 24, 2018On June 24, 2018, a controlled fire spread into Eastpoint. In 24 hours it burned about 1,000 acres, and 36 families lost their homes. The Eastpoint Church of God opened its doors to the families who had been driven out, and the Red Cross sheltered more than 175 people there.
