About Wewahitchka, Florida
Wewahitchka shipped 1,000 barrels of tupelo honey each year. Tupelo trees grew in the swamps along northern Florida's rivers and bloomed white in March and April. Beekeepers from nearby states brought their swarms here every spring. Some came by truck, and others floated down the streams on rafts.
Wewahitchka took its name from a Seminole word meaning water eyes. Two lakes at the edge of town, Lake Julia and Lake Alice, look like a pair of eyes. Settlers arrived around 1870, and the city served as the Gulf County seat from 1925 until 1965.
