About Port Wentworth, Georgia

Port Wentworth is a city of 10,878 people in Chatham County and part of the Savannah metropolitan area. It sits in the county's northern corner, with Effingham County across the line to the north.

Garden City borders Port Wentworth on the southeast, and the Savannah city limits, drawn around Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, border it on the southwest. The city covers 16.6 square miles, and the localities of Meinhard and Monteith lie inside its limits.

  • Dixie Crystals since 1916The Dixie Crystals sugar plant was established on Oxnard Drive in 1916, decades before Port Wentworth became a city. The plant grew into one of the best-known landmarks of the community.
  • The 2008 sugar plant blastOn February 7, 2008, an explosion struck the Dixie Crystals plant. It killed 14 people, ranging in age from 18 to 56, and injured at least 40 others. People in Levy, South Carolina, heard the blast and felt the walls of their houses shake. News of the disaster spread across the nation and was carried widely in Europe and Asia.
  • Incorporated in 1957Port Wentworth became a city in 1957, when the Georgia General Assembly passed its incorporation. It has grown quickly since then: the 2020 census counted 10,878 people, more than twice the 5,359 counted in 2010.
