About Poydras, Louisiana
Poydras is a community of 2,536 people in St. Bernard Parish, on the Mississippi's East Bank just above the Plaquemines Parish line. It took shape along the west side of the old district called Terre aux Boeufs, the Land of Oxen. In 1778 and 1779, while Spain ruled Louisiana, about 1,500 people from the Canary Islands, known as Isleños, made their homes in that district.
The town most likely takes its name from Julien Poydras, though no record confirms it. The 2000 census counted 3,886 people here. Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, and left Poydras badly damaged, which helps explain why the 2020 count was lower.
“Thousands of people travelled by automobile to Poydras to see the great crevasse.”
- The crevasse of 1922During the 1922 flood, the levee that local people had built gave way at Poydras, and the water destroyed the community. Within 24 hours the river at New Orleans fell .2 foot. Inspectors had called the levee sound only 30 minutes before it broke, and some historians argue the break was made on purpose to protect New Orleans.
- Caernarvon in 1927Five years later, the Great Flood of 1927 put New Orleans in danger again. This time the levee at nearby Caernarvon was blown up on purpose, turning the high water away from the city.
- A sheriff born in 1869Albert Estopinal Jr. was born in Poydras in 1869, the son of Albert Estopinal Sr., who went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. The son stayed in St. Bernard Parish and served it as district attorney, judge and sheriff.
