About Terrytown, Louisiana
Terrytown is a community of 25,278 people in Jefferson Parish, on the Westbank of the Mississippi River, bordering New Orleans. It began as a subdivision built by developer Paul Kapelow, who showed it to the press on March 5, 1960. The homes used the newest building ideas of the day, and each one put all of its plumbing in a single wall.
The public came to see it the next day, March 6, 1960, which is counted as the date Terrytown was founded. Kapelow named the new town for his first daughter, Terry. Carol Sue Avenue, one of the two main streets, carries the name of his second daughter, Carol Sue, and it crosses Terry Parkway.
- A library since 1974Jefferson Parish Library opened the Terrytown Library on October 9, 1974, across the street from the Terrytown Playground. It closed for renovations in December 2009. Parish council member Chris Roberts put riverboat gaming money toward the work, and when the doors opened again on September 8, 2010, visitors came in through a new main entrance.
- Home of Oakwood CenterOakwood Center, one of the major shopping malls of the New Orleans area, stands in Terrytown.
- A Terrytown lawmakerBryan Adams, one of Terrytown's notable people, represented District 85 of Jefferson Parish in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2012 to 2016.
