About Radford, Virginia

Radford is an independent city of 16,070 people on the New River. Travelers heading west once stopped at the small village by the river for water and food. After the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad came through in 1854, a large depot went up here. It was named Lovely Mount for a well-known mountain so that people could remember where it was. Because the station sat halfway between Lynchburg and Bristol, it was also called Central Depot. The trade it brought turned the village into a railroad town, and in 1891 it took the name Radford, for Dr. John B. Radford.

Between 1900 and 1930 an ice company, a creamery, milling companies and preserving plants opened in Radford. In 1913 the town was chosen for Radford State Normal School, a college for women. It became Radford College in 1924 and Radford University in 1979. In 1940 and 1941 the military built the Radford Army Ammunition Plant nearby, and families poured in to work there. Monroe Terrace, Radford Village and Sunset Village were built to house them, and they are still lived in today.

  • The flood of 1940On August 14, 1940, a slow tropical depression left from the Georgia and South Carolina hurricane raised the New River to the worst flood in Radford's recorded history. The gauge across from Bisset Park read 35 feet 11.5 inches, close to 22 feet over flood stage. People in low areas fled, and Burlington Mills and the Lynchburg Foundry closed, but no deaths were reported. A sign marking the flood went up there on October 18, 2011.
  • General Wharton's GlencoeConfederate Brigadier General Gabriel C. Wharton lived after the war at Glencoe, a two-story brick Second Empire house built in 1870 above the New River. It first showed up on the tax rolls in 1876. The family kept it until 1996, after it had stood empty for 30 years, and then it went to the city. Today it is a museum of early Radford, and it joined the National Register in 2000.
  • Lovely Mount/First Baptist ChurchRadford's first Baptist church, Lovely Mount/First Baptist, was the church of the town's African American community for over 60 years. In 1961 Radford College bought the building and tore it down to make room for an expansion of Peters Hall.
  • Wildwood Park since 1929In 1929 this 50-acre wooded ravine became Radford's first public park. It lies on the old line between East Radford, home of the college, and industrial West Radford. Adams Cave, on its western slope, was mined for saltpeter during the Civil War. Connelly's Run fed a city pool here for 45 years, until the city closed and filled it in 1965 rather than integrate it. A citizens' group saved the park from a highway bypass in 1998.
  • Five National Register placesArnheim, the home of Dr. John B. Radford, joined the National Register in 2002. Radford's other listed places are Glencoe, Halwyck, the Harvey House and the West Radford Commercial Historic District.
