About Snowville, Virginia
One of Snowville's first factories was a trip-hammer forge. Asiel Snow ran it with the help of David B. Bill, his son-in-law. It stood where Little Laurel and Big Laurel creeks meet. Wagons and ox carts hauled its iron into town. Local smiths turned it into stoves, kettles, horseshoes, buggies and hearses.
Snowville opened its first public school in 1858, inside a building first built as a woolen mill. In 1884 the county school board built a three-room schoolhouse. For many years, students came from miles around to board in town and study here.
- The town's old woolen millIn 1881 Snowville had a good woolen factory on Little River. It made kerseys, jeans, cassimeres and blankets, though it had stopped running by then.
