About Rainbow City, Alabama

Rainbow City is a city of 10,191 people in Etowah County, just south of Gadsden on the Coosa River. Hernando de Soto's soldiers passed through in 1540, but settlement began in 1818, when farm families moving west from the Carolinas and Georgia claimed homesteads near the river. Because the river curved here, they called the place Coosa Bend, and the land under today's city belonged to an early settler named Edmond Jones.

The settlement later took the name Morgan's Cross Road, because it stood where two trade routes crossed: the Gadsden-Ashville Road and the road to the landing at Gilbert's Ferry. By the 1830s it had its first school and its first church. The community did not incorporate until 1950, and it took the name Rainbow City from U.S. Highway 411, which locals call Rainbow Drive and which runs through the middle of town.

  • Harmony church, 1831On April 2, 1831, settlers organized a church that met in the Harmony Meeting House. When the area's first Baptist association formed some years after that, Harmony was among its first five member churches. The burial ground beside the meeting house, Old Harmony Cemetery, has since been declared a historic landmark.
  • A school from a settler's grandsonJohn Sheffield Jones, grandson of one of the first settlers, gave the land and $1,000 to build the first John S. Jones Elementary School. That building later burned down, and a new elementary school took its place. It still serves Rainbow City, teaching kindergarten through fifth grade.
  • Hidden Oaks since 2001Hidden Oaks Golf Course, a public nine-hole course, opened in 2001. Across town, the Vivian Lee Maddox Sports Complex has fields for baseball and softball and an 18-hole disc golf course.
