About Randolph, New Jersey
Randolph is a township of 26,504 people in southwestern Morris County, in the hills of the New Jersey Highlands. The Lenni Lenape lived here first, and Quakers were the first Europeans to settle the land. In 1753 Hartshorne Fitz-Randolph bought 1,000 acres in the Mine Hill area, and the township later took his name.
The New Jersey Legislature made Randolph a township on January 1, 1806, out of parts of Mendham Township. Over the next century, new towns were carved from its land. Dover was created in 1869 and broke away in 1896, then came Port Oram (now Wharton) in 1895, Mine Hill Township in 1923 and Victory Gardens in 1951. That last split left a small triangle of Randolph cut off between Victory Gardens and Dover.
- Iron mining since 1713New Jersey's first iron mine opened in Randolph in 1713, and mining shaped the township for generations. Its ore went into weapons for the Continental Army. When Washington's troops spent the winter camped at nearby Jockey Hollow, this area helped keep them supplied.
- Resort hotels and prizefightersEarly in the 20th century, vacationers came to Randolph for its woods, lakes, ponds and fresh air. Through the 1950s, farms, big hotels and bungalow colonies filled the township, and Phil Silvers and Frank Sinatra performed at the hotels. At the Saltz Hotel, Rocky Marciano, Max Baer, James J. Braddock and Floyd Patterson all trained or fought.
- Applejack and an old schoolThe Bryant Distillery went up in 1869 and became famous for its applejack. The Millbrook School, built in 1924, has been restored and now houses offices. The township counts both buildings among its historical landmarks, and the Randolph Historical Society keeps the story of the place in the Museum of Old Randolph.
- The Liberty Tree, from 1720For generations the Liberty Tree, which dated back to 1720, stood among Randolph's landmarks. The old tree eventually decayed, and it was taken down on August 31, 2018.
