About Ravena, New York
Ravena is a village of 3,271 people in Albany County, on the southeast side of Coeymans, the town that surrounds it. It grew up around a railroad stop where the two branches of the West Shore Railroad met. When the station and its buildings went up in 1883, Peter Pulver put up a hotel, a restaurant and three houses next to them, and those buildings became the start of the village.
The settlement took the name Coeymans Junction from the railroad, but residents disliked it, and it was easy to confuse with Coeymans Landing, another hamlet in the town. Two locals, C. M. Barlow and the minister R. G. Fenton, pushed for a new name, and in 1893 the post office department renamed the place Ravena. The village incorporated under that name in 1914.
- Ravine or Raven flour?Nobody is sure where the name Ravena came from. Some say the cliffs along the village's western edge led people to call the area the ravine. Others credit a brand of flour sold under the name Raven.
- A cement plant on the HudsonRavena is home to a cement plant that began as Atlantic Cement and has since been run by Lafarge and Holcim. In 2008 the Albany Times Union reported that it led New York in mercury emissions from 2004 to 2006.
- A $300 million upgradeBy 2016 Holcim was finishing a $300 million upgrade at the plant, swapping two 50-year-old wet-process kilns for one new dry-process kiln. The new kiln was meant to cut mercury emissions by 66% and to draw most of its water from the plant's limestone quarry instead of the Hudson River.
- Named for the town doctorMosher Park, the village's main park, honors Dr. Mosher, a general practitioner in Ravena from the 1950s through the 1980s. Its pool and tennis courts replaced the old Ravena Pool in the early 1970s, and the park also has room for baseball, football, basketball and picnics.
