About Raynham, Massachusetts
Raynham is a town of 15,082 people in Bristol County, about 32 miles south of Boston. Settlers arrived in 1639, when this was the east end of Taunton, and in 1652 bog iron turned up along the Two Mile River, later called the Forge River. That October, Taunton let the brothers James and Henry Leonard and Ralph Russell build a bloomery on the stream, with the woods on the far bank for charcoal. In 1656 it made its first iron, the first successful works in Plymouth Colony.
The Leonards were friends with King Philip, who traded with the family and had a hunting lodge at Fowling Pond, one and a quarter miles from the forge. When King Philip's War broke out in 1675, he ordered his men never to harm the Leonards, while two houses near the forge were kept under guard. On April 2, 1731, the east end of Taunton became its own town, named for Raynham in Norfolk, England, and John Wales was ordained its first minister that October.
“Raynham has been considered as one of the most patriotick towns in the state.”
- Iron for 220 yearsA company of settlers owned the forge, and for ninety years the Leonards held little of its stock, yet they ran the hearths. People paid one another in its bar iron. Josiah Dean became sole owner in 1777 and turned to nails and copper bolts for shipbuilders. Eliab B. Dean made it an anchor forge in 1825, and by 1839 a single Raynham nail factory was turning out eleven tons a day. The fires died in 1876.
- Guarding the court in 1786By the fall of 1786, Shays's followers had closed courts in two counties and meant to block the October session at Taunton. General Cobb, judge and militia commander, summoned the militia, yet only two companies came the first morning, both from Raynham, under Capt. Noah Hall and Lt. Reuben Hall. They guarded the court house and slept on their arms. The insurgents stood on the Green for nearly three hours, then left, and Cobb praised Raynham to the governor.
- A pulpit sent to NewportRaynham's first meetinghouse rose in 1729, before the town itself existed. When the building came down, its pulpit was shipped by water in 1782 to the First Congregational Church in Newport, which had lost its own pulpit during the British occupation.
- The night the tower fellIn 1832 the parish began building a new church at the center. The town claimed the old meetinghouse, and some residents talked of suing. Then one night a group of young men pulled the tower down, and the vane and lightning rod landed in the orchard of Amos Hall. The town took the parish to court anyway and lost.
- Toby Gilmore's farmToby Gilmore was kidnapped from West Africa as a boy around 1758 and sold to John Gilmore, a Raynham sea captain, in Rhode Island. He earned his freedom in the Continental Army and spent the winter at Valley Forge. Back in Raynham he married Rosanna Hack; the couple ran a business together, and he bought forty-five acres. His home, built around 1784, survives today, and he is buried in West Raynham's Hall and Dean Cemetery.
