About Red Bay, Alabama

Red Bay is a city of 3,232 people in western Franklin County, and its western edge runs along the Mississippi state line. It began as a crossroads settlement called Vinson's Crossroads, set on Gum Creek, and its first post office opened in 1887, shut down soon after and opened again in 1890. Early in its life the town shifted one and a half miles southwest to the spot where it stands now.

In 1907 a branch of the Illinois Central Railroad came through, and Red Bay became a stop on the line. The trains turned it into a center for cutting and shipping lumber, and the town incorporated that same year, though accounts disagree on the exact date. By 1912 the village itself counted 472 people.

  • Named for the bay flowerAn early county history says railroad builders renamed Vincents' Cross Roads around 1903 for the bay flower that grew thick along Big Bear Creek. The Encyclopedia of Alabama points to a large stand of redbay trees that once surrounded the town. E. W. Wattip and the Rogers and Smith families were among the first people to settle here.
  • Redbays over Main StreetIn the 1930s the Red Bay Garden Club planted redbay trees along Main Street. They grew into a canopy over the street and became one of the best known and best loved sights in the city.
  • A brick school from 1927Red Bay chose a new school site in 1927 and built a brick U for $45,000, a favorite school design in Alabama then, with elementary classes in one wing and the high school in the other. In 1967 fire destroyed the auditorium and the elementary wing while classes were in session, but no one was hurt. The town rebuilt at once, and the new sections opened for the 1968-69 school year.
  • The KickVan Tiffin graduated from Red Bay High School and went on to kick for the University of Alabama. His 52-yard field goal beat Auburn, Alabama's arch rival, and the play is remembered in Alabama's hall of fame as "The Kick."
  • Tammy Wynette's childhood townCountry star Tammy Wynette, born across the border near Tremont, Mississippi, spent a great deal of time in Red Bay as a child. The Red Bay Museum keeps exhibits on her beside fixtures from the city's first bank and a soda fountain counter from an early drug store, and State Highway 23 between Red Bay and Tremont is the Tammy Wynette Highway.
