About Rineyville, Kentucky
Rineyville is a community of 3,039 people in Hardin County, Kentucky, northwest of Elizabethtown. It grew up on the Illinois Central Railroad after Sylvester Riney donated land for the line in 1874, and the new town took his family's name. Mancil G. Riney, a grandson of Sylvester's father Zachariah, became its first postmaster.
The family had already lived on this ground for decades. Zachariah Riney arrived in 1830 and put up a double log house, and he lived there with his son Sylvester for nearly 25 years. The house was later made larger, and its logs were covered with clapboard.
- Abraham Lincoln's first teacherZachariah Riney was born in Maryland and came to LaRue County in 1811. While he lived on the Rolling Fork, he taught school there, and one of his pupils was a young Abraham Lincoln. Riney was the first teacher the future president ever had, and the town later carried his family's name.
- Over 1,000 acresAfter he moved to Hardin County in 1830, Zachariah Riney built a two-story log home and gathered more than 1,000 acres of land around it. He was one of the leading farmers of the area until he died in 1859. His home, the Zachariah Riney House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Volunteer firefighters since 1979Rineyville has never had a city government of its own. A magistrate on the Hardin County Fiscal Court speaks for the community, and residents founded the Rineyville Fire Department in 1979. More than 30 local volunteers serve in it.
