About Riva, Maryland
Riva is a community of 4,257 people in Anne Arundel County, about 5 miles west of Annapolis. Its first name was Taylorsville, a village that grew up in the mid-1800s on the South River's southern shore, where a ferry crossed the water and steamboats tied up at a landing.
Taylorsville's fortunes turned when a new bridge was built across the river where the Route 2 bridge stands today. Traffic shifted to the bridge and away from the village crossing, and by 1878 Taylorsville had reached its peak or already slipped past it. The ferry kept running for another forty years, until the county commissioners moved in 1918 to end its service and improve the road linking Taylorsville to the South River Bridge.
- A waterman's house from 1866George A. Davis put up a two-story frame house in Taylorsville by 1866, the year of the deed for his lot. The Davis family made their living on the water. Later censuses list George as an oysterman, and his death certificate calls him a retired steamboat captain. The Taylorsville House is one of just two homes left from the village's 19th century.
- New neighborhoods since 1978As the suburbs of Annapolis spread outward, Riva filled with large new homes. Berkshire was built between 1978 and 1981, and work on Annapolis Landing began in 1979. Sylvan Shores and Riva Farms are among the other big developments that shaped the community.
