About Riverdale, California
Riverdale is a community of 3,477 people in Fresno County, 23 miles south of Fresno. It started out as Liberty Settlement, a farming community beside Cole Slough, which branches off the Kings River. About 1875 the settlers along the slough dropped the name Liberty and chose Riverdale because the river ran so close, and the first post office opened that same year.
- Alfalfa and dairy countryWhen Paul E. Vandor wrote his History of Fresno County in 1919, he placed Riverdale about twenty miles from Fresno and ten from Kingsburg, and he described the land around it as alfalfa and dairying country.
- Just ahead of the Donner partyElisha Harlan was eight years old in 1846 when he crossed the plains to California with the George Harlan party from Niles, Michigan. His party traveled just ahead of the Donner party, whose journey ended in disaster that winter. Harlan died at Riverdale on February 27, 1919, at 81.
