About Hardwick, California

Hardwick began in Fresno County. In 1909 the state legislature cut 150 square miles from Fresno County and gave them to Kings County. The slice held a large part of the Laguna de Tache grant, including Hardwick. People north and south of the Kings River split over the change, but no public vote was held.

After the Hanford and Summit Lake Railway was built, Mr. McKean organized a company to open lumber yards along it. Hardwick got one of those yards. The firm was first called the Hardwick Lumber Company and later became the Summit Lake Lumber Company.
