About Lemoore, California

Lemoore is a city of 27,038 people in Kings County, 7.5 miles west-southwest of Hanford. Dr. Lovern Lee Moore settled here in April 1871, just above the high-water line on the north shore of Tulare Lake. At that time the area went by names such as Latache, Tailholt and the Lake District. The farm families around him raised sheep and grain, but they had to ride as far as 6 miles to Grangeville for mail.

Early in 1872 Moore surveyed a 10-acre subdivision and named its streets for pioneer families. That summer he sold lots at auction for $75 to $150, and one business lot brought $600. He asked Washington for a post office, and when the department turned down the name Latache, the town was named Lemoore for him. The Southern Pacific reached town in 1877 along Front Street, now E Street, and business moved toward the station. On July 4, 1900, Lemoore officially became a city.

  • A school dedicated with a danceIn 1873 a Mr. Armstrong gave 2 acres for Lemoore's first school. It was a frame building 18 by 30 feet, and the town dedicated it with a country dance in December 1873.
  • Wheat, wool and a flour millBy 1883 Lemoore had a flour mill that could turn out 200 barrels a day, and the town shipped wheat and wool. Before long it also became a center for fruit, though many fires slowed its growth in the early years.
  • The county seat race of 1893In 1893 the State Legislature split Tulare County, and its western half became Kings County. Hanford and Lemoore both wanted the county seat. Hanford had grown larger by then and had a second railroad, the Santa Fe main line, so the courthouse was built there.
  • Dr. Moore's 25 yearsLee Moore served the Lemoore area as a doctor for 25 years and helped bring thousands of babies into the world. He died on September 11, 1898.
  • From air field to jet baseLemoore Army Air Field opened in 1941 to train pilots, on 1,466 acres the federal government gathered for the Lemoore Basic Flying School. In 1961 it became Naval Air Station Lemoore, 7 miles west of town, which has grown into the largest Master Jet Base in the Navy.
