About Riviera Beach, Maryland

Riviera Beach is a community of 12,384 people in Anne Arundel County. It sits where the land meets the tidal Patapsco River on its southwest side, and farther upstream that same river forms Baltimore's harbor. Two inlets of the river frame it, Stoney Creek on the northwest side and Rock Creek on the southeast. For more than a century this shore was farmland, until the Riviera Beach Development Company was organized around 1924 to turn it into a resort.

  • The Thomas FarmIn the early 1800s two large farms divided the land. The Thomas Farm, also known as Greenock Farm, filled the whole western half of what later became Riviera Beach.
  • Locust LodgeLocust Lodge is said to be the old Thomas farmhouse, and it is possibly the oldest house around. It is one of three buildings left from the farming years, and graves of the Thomas family close by date from 1821 to 1887.
  • A 1928 sales pitchBuilders advertised houses in the new community in the Baltimore Sun. A July 8, 1928, ad called Riviera Beach a "refined, restricted" neighborhood, the language of the racial covenants that kept African-Americans and other minorities out of many Maryland communities until the Fair Housing Act of 1968.
