About Rockbridge, Ohio

Rockbridge is an unincorporated community of 160 people in eastern Good Hope Township, Hocking County, where U.S. Route 33 meets State Route 374 between Logan and Lancaster. It took its name from a natural sandstone arch close by, and a post office called Rockbridge has served the community since 1863.

In the 19th century the Hocking Canal brought more visitors to the arch, and the railroad that came later brought still more. Today the town sits at the edge of the Hocking Hills, a region of sandstone cliffs and wooded valleys on the Allegheny Plateau.

“Rockbridge's natural arch or bridge is more than 100 feet long and 10 to 20 feet wide, and gracefully arches 50 feet across a ravine. It is considered the largest natural bridge in Ohio.”
Ohio Department of Natural Resources
  • A state preserve since 1978The land around the arch was sold to the state of Ohio in 1977, and the next year it became Rockbridge State Nature Preserve. The preserve covers 182 acres and has about 2.75 miles of hiking trails. One trail goes straight to the bridge, and another makes a longer loop.
  • Carved from Black Hand SandstoneErosion shaped the arch out of Mississippian Black Hand Sandstone over millions of years. The span is only 3 to 5 feet thick, and it crosses a ravine on a stream that feeds the Hocking River.
  • A network named for the townIn 2019 a political advocacy group was formed at a conference held at an inn near Rockbridge. The group took the town's name and became the Rockbridge Network.
