About Logan, Ohio

Logan is a city of 7,296 people on the Hocking River, and it serves as the seat of Hocking County. Its name honors Chief Logan of the Mingo people, whose band was living here when European-American settlers arrived.

Thomas Worthington, then Governor of Ohio, began laying out the village on June 27, 1816. He set aside the lot on the corner of Main and Market for a public market, and the village grew around that crossing. Logan was incorporated as a city in 1839.

  • Colonel Young's third nightCharles Young, the Army's highest-ranking Black officer in 1918, had been medically retired and barred from a World War I command. To prove his fitness, he set out on horseback from his Wilberforce, Ohio, home on June 6, covering 497 miles in 17 days to reach Washington, D.C. Every hour he rode 45 minutes and walked 15. Logan was his third night's stop, and an Ohio historical marker on West Hunter Street notes it.
  • The Washboard Music FestivalThe Columbus Washboard Company, based in Logan, is the last maker of washboards left in the U.S. Each year downtown hosts the Washboard Music Festival on the Thursday ahead of Father's Day weekend, celebrating the beat the washboard lends to jug bands and Dixieland groups.
  • Ohio's first double roundaboutLogan became the first city in Ohio to build a double roundabout, at the interchange of U.S. Route 33 and Ohio State Route 664. It opened to traffic on December 4, 2013.
  • Fall Festival of BandsLogan High School hosts the Logan Fall Festival of Bands on October's first Saturday, inviting marching bands from elsewhere. The visitors put on their halftime shows for the crowd, and some create routines only for this event.
