About Roseland, New Jersey
Roseland is a borough of 6,299 people in western Essex County. Its land was once part of the Horseneck Tract, which settlers bought from the Lenni Lenape in 1702 for goods worth $325. The tract covered 14,000 acres between the First Mountain and the Passaic River, and its name came from an outline that looked like the head and neck of a horse.
The community first grew up as Centerville, but New Jersey had several places by that name, and the one in Hunterdon County already had a post office. To end the mix-ups, residents changed the name in 1874, picking Roseland over another choice, Roselyn.
- A borough born of a schoolIn 1907 a group of residents asked Livingston Township to build a school for their fast-growing community. The township refused, so they worked to break away and govern themselves. The New Jersey Legislature made Roseland a borough, carved from parts of Livingston Township, on April 10, 1908.
- A little railroad, 1938 to 1972For more than three decades a miniature railroad called the Centerville & Southwestern ran on the Becker Farm. The farm once took up nearly half of Roseland. Most of that ground is now a large business complex, though a few traces of the little railroad can still be found.
- Organon's headquarters since 2003The drug company Organon International opened its worldwide headquarters in Roseland in 2003. Automatic Data Processing, Curtiss-Wright, B&G Foods and the jam and jelly maker Polaner are also based in the borough.
