About Roxboro, North Carolina
Roxboro is a city of 8,134 people and the county seat of Person County, about 30 miles north of Durham. Before it took its present name, the community was called Mocassin Gap. The new name came from Roxburgh, a town in Scotland, and the two names sound alike even though they're spelled differently.
Roxboro was incorporated on January 9, 1855, and it is still the only incorporated town anywhere in Person County. The Person County Courthouse stands in the city, and it joined the National Register in 1979.
- A mob turned back in 1941On August 15, 1941, about 500 people massed at the Person County courthouse, where Cy Winstead, a Black man of 22, was held on a charge of raping a white woman. Sheriff M. T. Clayton and his officers drove them back with tear gas until Winstead was taken safely to the state prison in Raleigh, and no one was hurt. Ten men were indicted that October, and five served 12 to 18 months for unlawful assembly.
- Robert Paine, born 1799Robert Paine was born near Roxboro on November 12, 1799, the son of James and Nancy Williams Paine, and he spent his early years here. He went on to become one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
- Seven buildings, one museumThe Person County Museum of History makes its home in the house of Governor William W. and Musette Satterfield Kitchin. Its grounds hold seven historic buildings, each with exhibits: the Kitchin Home, the Curtis E. Long Memorial House, the office of Dr. John H. Merrit, a general store from Woodsdale, the Male Academy and Parsonage, a subscription school and a barn for packing tobacco. The Roxboro Male Academy and Methodist Parsonage joined the National Register in 1982.
- Snow Capital of the TriangleBecause Roxboro sits high, storms often leave more snow here than anywhere else in central North Carolina, which earned the city its nickname. It averages 7.2 inches of snow a winter, and its coldest reading, -9 °F, came in January 1985.
- A theater with 1,028 seatsUptown's historic movie theater was restored as the Kirby Civic Auditorium, which now stages plays, dance and concerts for up to 1,028 people. Branford Marsalis, Doc Watson and the Embers have all headlined there.
