About Rye, New Hampshire

Rye is a town of 5,543 people in Rockingham County, on the Atlantic coast, and nearly two thirds of its area is water. New Hampshire began here in 1623, when David Thompson led a small party of fishermen ashore at Odiorne's Point. They called their plantation Pannaway, a name Thompson took from an Abenaki guide, but by 1630 they had left for Strawbery Banke, the settlement that grew into Portsmouth.

William Berry was probably the first settler to stay on the land that became Rye. For decades people called the area Sandy Beach, and it was stitched together from land that had belonged to Hampton, Greenland, Portsmouth and New Castle. In 1726 New Castle made it a separate parish and named it Rye, after the Sussex town where the Jenness family came from. Rye was incorporated as a town in 1785.

  • Gosport on Star IslandIn 1715 New Hampshire created the township of Gosport on Star Island, in the Isles of Shoals. During the Revolution most islanders were taken off, many of them to Rye, and the village never filled up again. Star Island joined Rye in 1876, and since 1915 the Star Island Corporation has owned it. Its conference guests still sleep in the Oceanic Hotel and gather in the stone Gosport Chapel, built in 1800.
  • Carved into a roof beamCaptain John Locke arrived in New Hampshire in 1644. Either his son William built the Elijah Locke House, where Grove Road meets Central Road, in 1729, or his grandson Elijah built it in 1739, the year carved into one of its first roof beams. It ranks among the oldest buildings left standing on the Seacoast.
  • A church turned Town HallThe Rye Town Hall on Central Road began in 1839 as a Methodist church. The town paid $1000 for it in 1873, shifted the bell tower forward and later lifted the whole building to fit a new ground floor beneath it. It joined the National Register in 2020.
  • Watching the sea in 1943In World War II the Army turned Odiorne Point into Fort Dearborn and in 1943 raised the Pulpit Rock Base-End Station, an eight-story concrete lookout guarding the approach to Portsmouth harbor. Of fourteen such posts built in the state, it is the only one left. The point became a state park in 1972, and the Friends of Pulpit Rock open the tower to visitors now and then.
  • Three dates on the sealThe town seal had listed 1726, the year Rye became a parish, as its year of incorporation. A researcher caught the mistake in 2013, and that same year the seal was redrawn to show 1623, 1726 and 1785.
