About Sacramento, California
Sacramento is the capital of California, a city of 524,943 people and the seat of Sacramento County, where the American River flows into the Sacramento. John Sutter arrived here on August 13, 1839, holding a Mexican land grant of 50,000 acres. The following year his party built Sutter's Fort out of adobe, and he named his colony New Helvetia.
When James Marshall found gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma in 1848, thousands of miners poured in and squatted on Sutter land. By December of that year his son, John Sutter Jr., and Samuel Brannan were laying out a new city 2 miles south of the fort, against the elder Sutter's wishes. The first lots sold in January 1849, the town quickly became a busy trading center, and it was incorporated on February 27, 1850, making it the oldest incorporated city in California.
“Canopies of oaks and cottonwoods, many festooned with grapevines, overhung both sides of the blue current. Birds chattered in the trees and big fish darted through the pellucid depths.”
- Capital since 1854After statehood the legislature kept moving: San Jose through 1851, Vallejo in 1852 and Benicia in 1853. Sacramento offered lawmakers its county courthouse, and they settled here in 1854. Work on the Capitol began in 1860. Legislators moved into its chambers in 1869, while construction went on around them, and the building was finished in 1874. The constitutional convention of 1879 made Sacramento the permanent capital.
- Flood and cholera in 1850A flood on January 10, 1850, nearly wiped out the young city. Cholera followed late that year and killed 1,000 people, among them Hardin Bigelow, the first elected mayor, and 17 of the city's 40 doctors.
- Fire and a fast rebuildingA levee Bigelow had pushed for was finished in early 1852 but broke a month later. Then the Great Conflagration of November 2, 1852, burned more than 80 percent of the city's buildings. Within a month 761 had been rebuilt, many of them in brick.
- The streets were raisedThe Great Flood of 1862 was the worst in the city's history, and Leland Stanford rode a rowboat to his own inauguration as governor. From 1862 until the mid-1870s, the city built brick walls along its downtown streets and filled them with dirt. Old ground floors became basements, and parts of that buried level, called the Sacramento Underground, can still be seen.
- Where the railroad startedSacramento was the western end of the Pony Express. In 1863 work on the first transcontinental railroad began here, with Collis P. Huntington, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker putting up the money. Taxes on goods moved from riverboats onto rail cars in the city's rail yards helped pay for its public works.
