About Salina, New York

Salina is a town of 33,223 people in Onondaga County, on the north shore of Onondaga Lake just above Syracuse. Its name comes from the Latin word for salt, because the town grew up around the salt works by the lake. This land was Onondaga country, and a treaty with the Onondaga created a Salt Reservation that reached one mile around the lake.

In 1797 the state's surveyor general was given the power to set aside part of that reservation for making salt, and the place took the name Salina. A village of Salina was chartered in 1798, in what is now the Washington Square neighborhood of Syracuse. It had sixteen blocks, each split into four house lots, and by law no lot could sell for less than forty dollars. The town itself was organized in March 1809.

  • First stretch of the Erie CanalThe canal's middle section, running between Salina and Utica, was the first part of the Erie Canal to open. It opened in 1820 with elaborate celebrations, and the waterway gave Salina's industries a lift.
  • A town around the lakeAt first the town of Salina wrapped around Onondaga Lake, taking in much of the future city of Syracuse and land that later became the town of Geddes. Geddes split off as its own town in 1848.
  • Cut to size in 1847By 1846 it was plain that Syracuse would soon become a city, and people in Salina and Syracuse began talking over a charter to join their two villages. The act of incorporation passed in December 1847. It made the villages of Salina and Syracuse one place and left the town of Salina with the boundaries it still has.
  • The Alvord HouseThe Alvord House is a stone farmhouse in Salina. It joined the National Register in 1976.
