About Liverpool, New York

After the Erie and Oswego canals were built, Irish canal workers settled here, along with Yankee settlers. The early name for the place was Little Ireland. The state surveyor general laid out the streets and changed the name to Liverpool. The village was incorporated on April 20, 1830.

Salt was a big business here in the 1800s. Several salt works ran in the village, along with a sawmill. Liverpool became a key player in salt making along Onondaga Lake. In the 1890s the village was also known for making cigars.
