About Lakeland, New York
Lakeland is a hamlet of 2,556 people on the northwest side of Geddes, in Onondaga County. It takes its name from Onondaga Lake, whose southwest shore it follows. In 1896 a county history placed the Lakeland post office close to the main buildings of the Smiths and Powell Stock Farm, which it counted among the best farms in Onondaga County.
From the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth, several upscale hotels and a small amusement park lined the lake shore here, and a trolley line brought visitors out from Syracuse. The resort was already fading when World War I began, and it had vanished by the Great Depression. Interstate 690 and New York State Fair parking now cover much of that ground, and the fair's permanent grounds sit at Lakeland's southern edge.
“every tree, shrub or blade of grass within a square mile was dead”
- Holsteins and PercheronsWilliam Brown Smith and Edward A. Powell started the Smiths and Powell Stock Farm on the lake shore. The farm made its name bringing in and breeding Holstein cattle and Percheron horses, and the Lakeland post office was kept close to its main buildings.
- The Thanksgiving flood of 1943On Thanksgiving Day in 1943, a retaining wall around a waste bed at the Solvay Process Company plant broke, and 40,000 tons of calcium carbonate and magnesia poured over Lakeland. The sludge spread across two square miles, up to eight feet deep, and carried one car at the fairgrounds 1,000 feet. Sheriff's deputies, firefighters, state police and the Red Cross rescued residents, one man by rowboat. Nobody died, but 55 people lost their homes.
- Two months of cleanupCrews first meant to harden the waste with cinders and shovel it out, but they switched to thinning it with water and pumping it into Ninemile Creek, which took two months. Solvay Process bought the ruined houses and tore them down. Its own inquiry found the dikes had been built too fast from old waste under wartime pressure, and the company moved its waste beds back from the lake. Most of the flooded ground is now fair parking.
