About Sammamish, Washington

Sammamish is a city of 67,455 people in King County, on a plateau east of Lake Sammamish. Martin Monohon settled here for good in 1877. He built a log house on 160 acres and later ran a ferry landing on the lake. In 1889 a railroad reached the east shore, and a sawmill moved to the new town of Monohon. By 1911 the town had 300 people, a depot and a 20-room hotel. On June 26, 1925, a cigarette butt dropped in sawdust started a fire that burned nearly the whole town. The mill was rebuilt and ran until 1980, but the town never came back.

For decades afterward the plateau held woods, chicken and dairy farms, and lake resorts. Houses began spreading onto it in the 1960s, and new neighborhoods, stores and schools followed in the 1970s and 1980s. Voters turned down joining Issaquah in 1991 and rejected becoming a city the next year. Frustrated with how the county handled growth, they approved a city in 1998, and Sammamish was incorporated on August 31, 1999. It annexed Klahanie on January 1, 2016.

“Typically the resorts consisted of quiet cabins and a lake that provided plenty of aquatic activities, and all of them had a dance floor that was sure to please.”

  • A Snoqualmie nameMembers of the Snoqualmie Tribe say the name blends Sqawx, their word for Lake Sammamish, with abs, an ending for the people of a place. Snoqualmie hunters used the plateau, and a small village of perhaps several dozen people stood at the foot of Inglewood Hill into the early 1900s.
  • The first SammamishOn Weber Point, a settlement of about 50 residents who called it Sammamish had a rail stop and two shingle mills. The first mill made more than seven million shingles in 1893, then burned. Joseph Weber rebuilt it in 1901, added a second by 1907, and cut up to 100,000 cedar shingles a day. With the nearby trees gone and the Depression on, Weber closed in December 1930, and the settlement was empty by decade's end.
  • One room, eight gradesThe Inglewood Grammar School went up in the first half of the 1890s at what is now NE 8th Street and 228th Avenue NE. A sturdier building replaced the first log school by 1900, and one teacher taught grades one through eight, seating pupils in rows by grade. The school closed in 1920, and the empty building stood until it collapsed in the mid-1970s.
  • Picnics at Alexander'sCaroline Alexander opened a picnic ground on the southeast shore of Lake Sammamish in 1917 and ran it until she died in 1932. Her daughter Hazel and son-in-law George Ek built it into a favorite for company and political picnics, with a dance hall, an oven 20 feet by 6 feet and four tables 40 feet long. It stayed open until 1985, when a new owner tore it down for housing.
