About San Diego Country Estates, California

San Diego Country Estates is a community of 10,395 people in San Diego County, set in the San Vicente Valley southeast of Ramona. Locals call it The Estates. Long before it was built, the northern Ipai, a group of the Kumeyaay, camped in the valley as they moved between Escondido and Lake Henshaw. They left grinding stones in the boulders along the creeks, where they ground acorns into meal for bread.

In the 1700s Father Mariner of Mission San Diego de Alcalá came upon the valley and named it for Saint Vincent. In 1846 the valley went into a Mexican land grant whose long name joined Cañada de San Vicente with Mesa del Padre Barona, and families such as the Barnetts and the Dukes settled there. In 1970 the builder Raymond A. Watt bought 3,250 acres of the valley and laid out the new community that grew into the Estates.

  • Riggs vs. Court in 1973Bobby Riggs, a 55-year-old former player, challenged Margaret Court, then 30 and the top-ranked woman in the world, to a tennis match. They played on May 13, 1973, at the San Vicente Country Club, and Riggs won 6-2, 6-1.
  • The Witch Fire of 2007The Witch Fire started near the Estates on October 21, 2007, and thousands of residents fled, their cars backed up on San Vicente Highway toward Ramona. People feared the flames would cross the ridge to the west and catch the traffic, but the wind shifted. The fire went on to burn 197,990 acres and forced about 1,000,000 people in the San Diego area to leave home, the largest evacuation California had seen.
  • The Cedar Fire's startFour years earlier, on October 23, 2003, the Cedar Fire broke out inside Cleveland National Forest, about 3 miles to the east of the Estates.
