About San Marcos, California
San Marcos is a city of 94,833 people in San Diego County's North County region. Legend says that in 1797 Spanish troops were chasing a small band of Native Americans who had taken livestock from the San Luis Rey Mission. During the chase they found a fertile valley. They named it Los Vallecitos de San Marcos, the Little Valleys of Saint Mark, because the day they found it, April 25, was St. Mark's Day. Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted the rancho to his relative, Jose María Alvarado, on April 22, 1840.
John H. Barham founded the area's first town in 1883, and by 1884 it had a post office, a blacksmith, a feed store and a weekly newspaper. The first town of San Marcos sat about a mile north of Barham. In 1887 the Santa Fe Railroad promised to build through the valley, but its tracks ran one mile from the center of San Marcos. Barham faded because it was far from the railroad, and its school, started in 1886, moved to San Marcos three years later. To avoid that fate, residents moved their homes a couple of miles east along the tracks in 1903, and the new town grew up at what are now Mission Road and Pico Avenue.
- Wine and honey in Twin OaksJose María Alvarado died in 1846, one of those killed in the Pauma Massacre. His widow sold the rancho to Lorenzo Soto, who sold part of it to Cave Couts in the late 1850s, and the Couts family raised livestock there. The first permanent settler was Major Gustavus French Merriam of Topeka, Kansas. He homesteaded 160 acres in the north Twin Oaks Valley and made wine and honey.
- Colorado River water in 1956For decades San Marcos lived on farming, and later on dairies and poultry. Colorado River water first reached the valley in 1956, new businesses opened, and the population quickly reached 2,500. The city incorporated on January 28, 1963. In the 1970s it was the third fastest-growing city in California, and it had 17,479 people by 1980.
- The Red Barn of 1952The Williams Barn, built in 1952 to look like a big red barn, serves as a community center and reception hall. It stands in Walnut Grove Park in Twin Oaks, beside a group of historic houses from around the city that the San Marcos Historical Society looks after.
- Two college towns in onePalomar College has its main 200-acre campus in northern San Marcos, and the giant letter P on the hill above it can be seen for miles. Cal State San Marcos was founded in 1989 on a 304-acre hillside in the southeastern part of the city.
