About Selah, Washington
Selah is a city of 8,153 people in Yakima County, just north of Yakima, above the spot where the Naches River joins the Yakima. Its name comes from an Indian word for still or smooth water. Alfred Henson became its first settler in 1865, staking a claim on land the Elks Golf and Country Club would later occupy, and after Yakima County was formed in 1867 he was elected one of its commissioners.
A real town began in 1907, when two Swedish immigrants, Gus Remington and Olaf Larson, opened the Selah Trading Company and followed it with a feed store and a hotel. Fire destroyed most of the businesses in 1908, so the partners built the Selah Mercantile Company, and Remington advertised in Swedish papers in the Midwest to draw new farmers. By 1912 Selah had a newspaper, a bank, a drug store, a meat market and a livery stable.
“After riots broke out in the Yakima Valley between farmers and striking workers, the State Patrol and the National Guard were called in to protect local crops, and it was not uncommon to see machinegun-toting guardsmen patrolling Selah's streets.”
- Ditches that greened the valleyIn 1880 George Taylor, who had homesteaded here in 1866, dug a small ditch to carry Yakima River water into the Selah Valley, and farmers began trading sheep and cattle for hops, orchards and alfalfa. In 1888 two men, B. F. Young and John Stone, organized the Selah Ditch Company and dug a bigger canal. By 1895 more landowners picked Selah than Wenas, and dry sage had turned to green fields.
- Incorporated March 17, 1919In 1918 Selah had nearly 200 people, but state law required 300 before a town could incorporate. Boosters waited for the fall harvest, signed up orchard and alfalfa workers, and counted 310 residents. After a caucus in February 1919, all 63 voters at the March election said yes, and on March 17, 1919, the county commissioners made Selah a municipality of the fourth class.
- Yakima County's first court caseWilliam McCallister, the second settler in Selah, arrived a few months after Henson and never got along with him. When McCallister threatened to kill Henson, the dispute became the first court case in Yakima County history. Nobody knows how it went, because the records burned with the county courthouse in 1882.
- Community Day since 1926Selah opened a new high school in 1926 with 154 students, and the opening started the town's first Community Day. At the end of the school year, floats, autos covered in flowers and children on decorated bikes paraded to the school grounds for a picnic. Selah still holds a town-wide summer gathering.
- The Apple Juice CapitalApple juice took hold in Selah during the Great Depression, when a small processing plant opened and kept growing through the 1950s. The grower-owned Tree Top co-operative took it over in 1960 and keeps its headquarters and two processing plants in town. A brewery that opened after Prohibition ended in 1933 also made Selah Springs beer popular in Central Washington until it closed in the 1950s.
