About Union Gap, Washington
Union Gap is a city of 6,568 people in Yakima County. It takes its name from the water gap the Yakima River cuts between Ahtanum Ridge and the Rattlesnake Hills. In 1865 a wagon train bound for Puget Sound halted by the river here, and its settlers, led by Dr. L. H. Goodwin, chose to stay. The little village took the name Yakima City in 1869 or 1870 and was incorporated under territorial law on November 23, 1883.
A year later the Northern Pacific Railway surprised the town by putting its Yakima Valley terminal about four miles to the north. Starting in December 1884, at least 100 buildings were set on rollers and pulled by horse teams to the depot site, which became North Yakima. Stores kept trading during the move, and so did the bank and the courthouse. The old town left behind was renamed Union Gap to avoid confusion. It slowly filled up again as Yakima grew, and today it is the main shopping center of the Yakima Valley.
- The Battle of Union GapThe Yakama chief Kamiakin signed the Walla Walla Treaty in 1855 only under pressure from Governor Isaac Stevens, and war broke out soon after. Kamiakin fought in its first two battles, at Toppenish Creek on October 5, 1855, and at Union Gap on November 9, 1855. The fighting went on for three years until an Indian defeat at Spokane Plains on September 5, 1858, ended the war.
- Kamiakin's DitchKamiakin dug a trench half a mile long to carry water from a spring to his gardens east of present-day Union Gap. Many count it as the Yakima Valley's earliest man-made irrigation system. The first pioneers knew the trench by Kamiakin's name, and it may have taught them that the dry bunchgrass land around them only needed water to grow good crops.
- A mission in 1851Catholic priests were the first outsiders to stay for long in the valley. Accounts differ, but Oblate missionaries seem to have arrived around 1848, and the mission of St. Joseph d'Ahtanum was founded by 1851, only a short distance east of where Union Gap stands now.
- A 1960s pop band's nameGary Puckett grew up in neighboring Yakima, and he named his group after this town. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap became a nationally successful pop act in the late 1960s.
