About Siasconset, Massachusetts
Siasconset, called 'Sconset for short, is a village of low cottages and grassy lanes. Many of its cottages have blue shutters. Tradition says that in the past, an unwritten law kept blue shutters for the houses of captains and first mates.
The old village was made up of ancient fishermen's huts. Later these huts were turned into pretty villas, and Siasconset became a place of cottage life. Sankaty Head Lighthouse stood nearby on a high bluff. Its revolving light was counted among the best on the coast.
- What the name meansThe ending set in Siasconset means near, so it cannot be a person's name. The first syllable probably comes from missi, meaning great. Askon is a word meaning horn or bone. Massive whale bones were a common sight along the shores of southern New England.
